Florida Strings was formed in 1996 by musician Leo Salter when a friend, a Daytona Beach promoter, needed a local band to open for three internationally-known bluegrass bands. The event was called the Inaugural Daytona Bluegrass Festival. Leo pulled together a special group of musicians for this unique concert which was held in the Daytona Beach Municipal Stadium.
A few months later, the tape that was recorded at this concert was sent to San Francisco, California, to enter the band in a contest sponsored by the National Entertainment Network, held to select the best amateur bluegrass bands in the nation.
They were one of the winning bands, which gave them excellent publicity in bluegrass publicatoins around the country and led to their being hired in September 1997 to open for Steve Kaufman of Winfield, Kansas, National Flatpicking Guitar Champion. This was Kaufman's first concert in the State of Florida.
Volusia County has hired Florida Strings to play for several Special events including:
The Grand Opening Celebration of Gemini Springs Park
Ocean Center, Volusia County Wildfires Victory Celebration
